Official Language. Guam Code Annotated, Title 1 General Provision, Chapter 7 Construction of this Code, §706, established that English and Chamorro are Guam's official languages.

CHAMORRO LANGUAGE & CULTURE EDUCATION.

PL 14-53 (1977)Establish the teaching of the CHamoru language and culture in the public schools of Guam and for other purposes.

PL 15-9 (1979)Amend Section 11682 for the Department shall develop a curriculum for Chamoru language and culture instruction to be taught in grades Kindergarten through sixth.

PL 21-34 (1991)Establish mandatory courses in the Chamoru language and the History of Guam in the Public Schools.

PL 21-70 (1991)Requiring the Guam Hymn in the Chamoru version be sung in Guam's schools and the Legislature.

PL 31-45 (2011)Expanding the Chamoru language and culture curriculum in public schools, requiring Chamoru language and culture in the secondary levels, seventh and eighth grades at the middle school level, and tenth grade in the high school level.

PL 31-50 (2011)An act to add a new Chapter 8 to Title 5A, Guam Administrative Rules and Regulations, Relative to the Guam Commission for Educator Certification Rules & Regulations. New requirements for Chamoru Teacher Certification.

Board Policy 351.4 (12/6/83)Graduation Requirements. Must include Chamoru language course to fulfill graduation credit requirements.

Board Policy 346 (1/23/84)Instructional Time for Elementary Schools. Primary Level (K-3), 100 minutes per week. Intermediate Levels (4-5th grade), 150 minutes per week.

Board Policy 340 (1/11/93)Chamoru Studies Guam History. Chamoru Studies and the Curriculum and Instruction Divisions shall jointly develop and implement a curriculum plan for teaching the CHamoru language in public schools. Chamoru Studies and the Curriculum and Instruction Divisions shall jointly develop and implement a comprehensive course in the History of Guam to be taught in middle and high public schools.

Board Policy 338 (11/27/00)Middle School Curriculum Requirements. This policy specifies the approved Middle School Curriculum each Guam Public Middle School will implement. This curriculum sets the required subjects that the transient student in grades six through eight shall complete before continuing to high school—two (2) consecutive semesters/ One (1) year of Chamoru Language.
