Attendance Policy

A student of Untalan Middle School must:
1)     Attend all classes except when there is valid reason for not
doing so.
2)     Arrive to all classes and homebase before the tardy bell rings
and stay until dismissed by the teacher.
3)     Present a note to the home base teacher explaining absence(s)
from school. The note must be written by the parent/guardian, a
doctor, or a school administrator. Absence(s) for three or more
consecutive days because of illness
requires a doctor’s
certification.

a.      Failure to bring an excuse note (within 2 school days) for an
absence will be documented as an unexcused absence and may be
used for court referral.
b.     Obtain an admit slip from the homebase teacher and show it to
your teachers. If you were absent in some periods because your
parent(s) or guardian(s) took you off the school campus for cause
(e.g. dental, doctors, court, etc.), then show your off campus pass to
your homebase teacher. He/She will issue you an admit slip for
periods missing.
4)     Be signed out by parent(s)/guardian(s) in the main office
before leaving the school campus during school hours. Keep your
copy and give to your homebase teacher upon return in order to get
an admit slip to excuse your absence(s) for the periods that you
missed when you were taken off the school campus.
5)     Always obtain a corridor pass from your teacher before leaving
class. (Misuse of a corridor pass is a violation of school rules.)
6)     Submit the corridor pass to the teacher when you return to
class.
7)     Obtain an admit slip from the administration upon your
return from suspension.
8)     Notify teacher(s) and the PPO of future absences: for example,
hospitalization. (See Pre-Arranged Absences Procedure in the
Student Handbook here.)
9)    Provide a doctor’s certification for every absence after
accumulating excused absences as deemed necessary by
administration and teachers due to a pattern of absences.

The Uniform Policy

During the 1999-2000 school year, L.P. Untalan Middle School
responded to a call from parents and adopted a mandatory
school uniform policy.

All role groups (i.e.students, parents, teachers, support staff, PTO
officers, and administrators) in the school community were involved
in the dialogue and decision-making related to the uniform policy.
Students and their parents played a large part in the selection of
the styles and colors based on preference, practicality of clothing,
maintenance, and costs.

It is our hope that the uniform policy contributes to a reduction of
violence on campus and the improvement of student behavior and
attendance. The policy is consistent with the school’s mission
statement and commitment to providing students with a quality
learning environment that improves desired student outcomes.

Corrective Reading

Corrective Reading is a complete core program that uses the
Direct Instruction model to help students master essential
decoding and comprehension skills. The program includes
decoding and comprehension strands at four instructional levels.

Depending on their reading levels, students work on decoding
skills, comprehension skills, or both. The Decoding programs
help students accurately identify words, rely on letter sequences
to determine word pronunciations, and significantly increase
reading rates. The Comprehension programs help readers to
attend to and follow instructions, build their vocabularies, and
improve background knowledge and thinking skills in order to
understand what they read.

To ensure maximum participation from all stake holders, CR will
be taught for 90 minutes a day. All students will receive two 45
minute blocks of CR instruction everyday. Those students requiring
greater remediation (a decoding score of B1 or less) will receive
an additional dose of decoding instruction as one of their electives
until they reach B2.
