UMS Dominates Stock Market Game

8A Team competed in the Stock Market Game from February to April and won the Top 2 places out of 150 teams from public, private, and military schools on island from elementary to high school. Both teams were coached by Mrs. Madrid Borja. At the Award Ceremony on April 24, the teams won many prizes such as a tablet PC, gift certificates to Holiday Resort, Capricciossa, TGIF, Micronesia Mall Theaters, Seawalker, Alupang Beach Club and National Office Supply. Organized by Asia Pacific, there was a total of seven teams from Untalan who placed in the Top 20.
Untalan wins at Art-a-Thon

8th Grader Gwendolyn Y.'s artwork, titled "Tiger," won Third Place in the Middle School division in the 15th Annual Isla Art-a-Thon. The exhibit at the Isla Center for the Arts also features artworks from Untalan's Isa B. and Shanelle O. The exhibit is open through May 3.
Guam History Day Winners
Students who participated in this year's Guam History Day were recognized. Three of the students—Kamerin G., Gayle D., and Jodene S.—won First Place in the Documentary category and will be representing the island in June at the National History Day in Washington, DC. Also, Patricia D. won 2nd place in the Individual Performance and Cailey C. won 3rd place for Research Paper Category. Special Olympics

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Athletes, staff, faculty, and admin walk behind the UMS banner during the Special Olympics on March 23 at the Okkodo High School track.
Career Day @ Untalan

CAREER DAY: George Washington High School JROTC armed drill team member and a UMS alumni shows his skills to Untalan's 1,200 students in attendance. JROTC was one of many organizations and businesses who presented during the 2013 UMS Career Day on March 23.
Gupot Chamorro Celebration
Gupot Chamorro celebration on campus included Simanan Competition organized by the Elective Department such as Geran Tali (Tug-o-War), Hulo' yan Papa' (Over and Under), and Makodu (arm wrestling) as well as cultural perfomances, food, and other fun activities by clubs and student organizations throughout the day on March 15. Robotics Program Showcased

ROBOTICS: Students from the GATE Robotics Classes at UMS demonstrate to an audience what they learned about programming a robot at Guam Premier Outlets on March 16 for the Public Schools Week Showcase.
Weaving Champions

WEAVING COMPETITION: UMS won first place once again in the Gupot Chamorro Weaving Competition on March 9 at the Agana Shopping Center. Members and advisors of the Chamorro Culture Club pose with their woven trophy along School Principal Jim Reyes. UMS has continued to consistently win the competition in recent years.

Students Receive Awards

Hundreds of students received awards for "A" Honor Roll, "B" Honor Roll, and Principal's List on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the UMS Cafeteria. Right: PTA teacher rep Sumch Choay, PTA Vice President Joe Quinata, and Principal Jim Reyes congratulated the deserving students.
Jingle Jungle Performances

Wildcats celebrated the holidays with fun, food, and performances during the annual Jingle Jungle activities on Dec. 20.
Chorale and Band Ring in Holidays

The UMS Chorale, along with the UMS Band, showed their Christmas Cheer with a "UMS Wildcat Holiday Dinner Performance" on Dec. 18. Lead by Ms. Christine Pama and Mr. Michael DiAmore, the dinner and performance was held in the UMS Cafeteria.
High School Students Present to Classes

Students from Simon Sanchez High School begin their presentation about recycling with a song. Headed by Mrs. Kim Pangelinan and Mel Blas, the students were prepared to meet service learning requirements by conducting powerpoint presentations in UMS Science and many other classes on Dec. 17 and 18. Among the topics were Shark Finning, Ocean Garbage Patch, Ocean Pollution, Obesity, Turtle Extinction, Global Warming, and Rip Currents.
UMS Holds Food Drive

Boxes and boxes of canned goods were collected by the UMS school community in October and November for families in need during Thanksgiving and the holidays. The Food Drive was organized by Rose Mafnas of Parent Outreach.
School Portrait Re-takes Nov. 26
School portrait re-takes through Premium Art Photo will be held on Monday, Nov. 26 in I203 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Packages cost from $26 to $34.

Volleyball Wildcats are tops in Sportsmanship

Untalan's volleyball team of faculty, admin and staff received the Sportsmanship trophy for the GovGuam Volleyball League on Nov. 19 at the Dededo Sports Complex. Pictured at the ceremony are some of the players: Mr. Reyes, Mr. Gomez, Mrs. Borja and Mr. Shipman.
Parents Meet with Teachers

Accelerated
Math teacher, Mrs. Bernadeth Gumataotao (right), talks with parents during Untalan's Parent Teacher Conference on Nov. 8. About 550 parents signed in to pick up their child's report card with the 6th graders achieving the highest percentage of parent participation at 54%. As a reward, the 6th graders were allowed to dress down on Nov. 16.
Parent Portal Training
Parents are welcomed to attend a workshop on Parent Portal—the online program that allows parents to check their child's grades and progress in all of their classes—on Thursday Nov. 15 in J106, after the PTO Meeting at 6pm.
UPDATE: Parents need to make an account on Parent Portal although parents received login information when they came to pick up their child's report card during Parent-Teacher Conference day on Nov. 8. Please email Computer Operator Stephanie Martinez (spmartinez@gdoe.net) for your access codes.

Boy's Volleyball Team are
Middle School Champs
The UMS Boy's Volleyball team won their last game of the season on Oct. 18 and claimed the Interscholastic Middle School Boys' Volleyball League title. Coached by Mr. Rod Pama, the UMS team hasn't won the title since 2004.
It's Portraits Time

Students line up to take their school and yearbook portraits on Sept. 26 during their Language Arts class. The photo company is Premium Art Photo. Portraits will be distributed by Language Arts teachers beginning Oct. 25.
USS George Washington Drops Anchor at Campus

Crew members from the Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. George Washington visited several UMS classrooms on Sept. 24 to talk about their jobs and experiences in the U.S. Navy. Pictured above are Petty Officer 2nd Class Changwei Huang (left), who spoke of being a parachute rigger, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Chad Fogel, who described his experience as a military police.
Teachers Develop Skills

For Professional Development Day on Sept. 21, UMS teachers learned some literacy-focused teaching strategies for all subjects, such as using graphic organizers and foldables, along with a session on unpacking Common Core standards. Chingy Visits Campus
Rapper Howard Bailey, Jr., otherwise known as "Chingy," visited the UMS campus on Sept. 13. After a message about staying in school, he gave free tickets for his Sept. 14 concert to several talented students who rapped or danced on stage.
UMS Chorale Performs

The UMS Chorale, lead by Music teacher Ms. Christine Pama, sing Coldplay's "Fix You" during the school assembly which paid tribute to the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
Wildcat Families Visit Teams

Mr. Ryan Shipman, along with other 8A Team teachers, presented to families of 8A students during Open House Night on Sept. 6. Many parents walked the hallways and met their child's teachers in similar team presentations around campus.
Wildcats Donate to Victims of Philippine Disaster

WILDCAT DONATION—Boxes of clothing, shoes, blankets, food, soap, school bags, and other miscellaneous items were donated by our wildcat families, faculty and staff for the victims of the Philippine's latest disaster. At least 11 people were killed as a tropical storm caused widespread flooding. Over 185,000 families were displaced from their homes and are forced to stay in evacuation centers. The donations were taken to National Office Supply to be shipped to the Philippines. Pictured above are some of our faculty and staff: (from left) Mr. V. New Bell Schedule
For SY 2012-13, UMS will be conducting classes via the Block Schedule in which classes will be 80 minutes long and lunch will be 45 minutes. There will be only 4 periods a day, with each set of periods alternating every other day. View the new bell schedule here.
Required uniforms can be purchased from Gino's in the Agana Shopping Center. Students who would like to donate their old uniforms can drop them off at the Main Office in Building I during regular hours.
