FBLG Students Nominated to Attend National Conference

NJHS Advisor Selected for Commendation from National Council

(Hagåtña, Guam) After an invitation from The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington, D.C., officials from F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School (FBLGMS) have named three students to attend the 2006 spring event. Corisa Contreras and Richard Duenas, both seventh graders and Jeremy Denusta, a sixth grader; have been nominated to join a prestigious list of students nationwide.

In a letter to Mrs. Felicitas Angel, FBLGMS National Junior Honor Society Advisor, The Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) wrote “You have been chosen from an impressive list of highly qualified Junior National Honor Society educators to be commended for your achievements in teaching and mentoring.”

Angel and the nominated students have been invited to the Nation’s Capitol for opportunities to interact with a distinguished Congressional panel within the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and to visit some of the most famous landmarks and important centers of government in Washington, D.C.

Their visit will include attendance to a variety of workshops and activities aimed at concepts of leadership in historical events since the Colonial period to present, issues that affect the different historical eras through a series of hands-on experiences and presentations, and enhancing critical thinking skills, promoting problem solving within groups and introduce them to different ways of thinking.

According to the JrNYLC website “The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) helps scholars develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past and empowering them to make a positive social impact in their community and the world. Geared toward looking at leadership through a practical, everyday lens, JrNYLC incorporates a detailed examination of eight leadership traits and focuses on leaders in American history and social advocacy.”

GPSS and the Office of the Superintendent proudly congratulate Mrs. Felicitas Angel, Corisa Contreras, Richard Duenas, and Jeremy Denusta for their achievements that bring national recognition to Guam’s Public Schools.
