Students Released Early to Avoid Encroaching Fire |
|
(Hagåtña, Guam) Officials of Merizo Martyrs Memorial School took notice of an approaching grass fire adjacent to school property at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. Officials then decided at 1:15 p.m. to call the Guam Fire Department after careful monitoring of the fire as it approached the North side of the campus near the E-Wing. As of 1:30 p.m. school officials observed that the fire began to encroach into school property through the fence and began to affect students in five classrooms. Thick smoke and ashes moved into those classrooms and then started to move into other wings on campus. Officials took precaution and moved students out from those affected classrooms to a safe zone. The Superintendent’s Office was promptly notified of the situation and granted permission for an early release of students at 1:30 p.m. GFD personnel contained and secured the fire. No injuries were reported nor were there any damages to any structures, however, thick smoke still remained in several classrooms and the Main Office after the fire was secured. |
