GPSS To Help Guam National Guard, Agencies, Promote Red Ribbon Week

(Hagåtña, Guam) The Guam Public School System will be showing support for Red Ribbon Week as the Guam National Guard, The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and other agencies kick off festivities with a Poster Contest on Friday, October 21, 2005. Deadline for submission of entries also falls on Friday, October 21, 2005. Public School students are asked to submit their entries down to the Superintendent’s Office.

Honoring slain DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, friends and neighbors back in 1985 wore red badges of satin to show they would support his fight against illegal drugs. Since then the campaign has grown to into a tradition of wearing and displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs.

Guam National Guard and the DEA have teamed up with GPSS to support activities slated to promote the traditions started in honor of Camarena. Red Ribbon Week is being celebrated from October 23 31, 2005 throughout the nation. A 5k Run/Walk/Jog will be held at Paseo Park on Saturday, October 22, 2005 along with a carnival on October 29, 2005.
