Governor’s Office and Homeland Security Give Schools Weather Radios

(Hagåtña, Guam) After tossing the idea around through several discussions, the Guam Public School System and the Office of Homeland Security (OHS) have made the idea a reality. Governor Felix P. Camacho and Director of OHS, Frank Blaz, Jr. this morning presented 37 Weather & Marine Band radios to Associate Superintendent of Secondary, Kenneth Chargualaf and Acting Associate Superintendent of Elementary, Rose Rios for use in Guam’s public schools.

Through the efforts of the Governor’s administration and OHS, a grant was made possible to procure the radios that will serve the schools in times of emergency and during passing storms when school facilities become shelters.

The radios are just a first phase of equipping GovGuam with communications suitable for typhoons and other emergency related functions. School safety was paramount to the acquisition of these radios according to Director Blaz, Jr. who feels will alert school officials in a timely manner. “These radios will assist Principals in times of alert as they handle students during class or those seeking shelter at the school” Blaz, Jr. said.

The Guam Public School System is very pleased to receive this much needed critical communications equipment, in light of Guam’s yearly preparedness for typhoons.
