Guam Public School System Begins School Year 2005-2006

(Hagåtña, Guam) The School Year 2005-2006 is officially underway with Guam’s 37 Public Schools opening their doors to classes this morning. Principals, Teachers, and staff from around the island greeted the 30,000 plus students under cloudy skies and some rain showers.

Many of Guam’s leaders assisted in welcoming back students, greeting them and their parents. Deputy Chief Ralph Sgambelluri of the Department of Customs & Quarantine said “This morning went very well, and we’re glad to see that some of the parents recognized us from this summer.” Sgambelluri and officers from Customs contributed many hours to preparing M.U. Lujan Elementary School this past summer assisting with various school readiness projects.

M.U. Lujan Principal, Janice Chargualaf said “This school year opening day was one of the smoothest we’ve had in recent years.” The Yona campus opened with 742 students enrolled in grades K-5. “We\ are still holding registration for Kindergarten, which is the grade that usually changes in enrollment the next couple of weeks.” Chargualaf said.

Machanaonao Elementary School Assistant Principal Genevieve Santos is pleased to see the year off to a good start. “We are very happy to say that Public Health inspected our cafeteria today and gave us an ‘A’ rating.” Other school cafeterias will be undergoing inspections as well with follow ups taking place in the next three weeks.
