More Professional Development Slated for Next Week

NIFDI Completes Week 1 of DI Summer Institute

(Hagåtña, Guam) The 2005 Paraprofessional Leadership Academy will begin on Monday, August 8, 2005 starting with a two-day workshop for School Aides. Over 300 aides from around the district will participate and receive instruction on Conflict Resolution, Understanding Learning Disabilities, and Team Building. The theme for this two-day workshop “Empowerment, Enthusiasm, Effectiveness” is about helping these employees learn exactly what their roles and responsibilities are and help them sharpen their skills and knowledge.

Training begins on Monday and wraps up on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa. The next three days from Wednesday, August 10 to Friday, August 12, 2005, Guam Public School System will continue professional development this time with Substitute teachers. Also at the Hilton, several hundred substitute teachers will undergo training in areas such as Effective Classroom Management, Curriculum Development, and Disability Awareness.

The Guam Public School System will continue Week 2 of the Direct Instruction Summer Institute also on Monday, August 8, 2005 at the Holiday Resort and the Westin Resort Guam in Tumon. Instructors from the National Institute For Direct Instruction (NIFDI) will be conducting training sessions for new teachers, teachers who need additional training, returning teachers who are Fourth & Fifth grade teachers or middle school teachers who will be teaching Connecting Math Concepts (CMC) and have not been trained in CMC, Reading Coordinators who are not training, and existing peer coaches in K - 8.

NIFDI completed their weeklong sessions today conducting training on Behavior Management and Data Analysis with Elementary and Middle School principals and assistant principals and reading coordinators at the Holiday Resort in Tumon.
