Training Schedules Set For Aides and Substitutes

(Hagåtña, Guam) The Guam Public School System has finalized plans for training school aides and substitute teachers this summer. School readiness not only means preparation of school facilities; it also means strengthening the professional development of employees. A Paraprofessional Leadership Academy has been proposed.

Workshops such as Team Building, Classroom Management, and Curriculum Development will be conducted from August 8-12, 2005. School aides will be attending 75 minute sessions in a rotating two day Academy while Substitutes will be attending 60 minute sessions in a rotating one day Academy for three sets of substitute groups.

The purpose behind the training is to increase the knowledge and skills of paraprofessionals and to improve the overall level of support for the Guam Public School System. The Academy objectives include: 1) Implement a Professional Development Plan for continuous training and to upgrade and improve the skills of paraprofessionals. 2) Design an effective evaluation tool to assess paraprofessional performance. 3) Develop Paraprofessional Standards and Performance Indicators.

The program is supported in part by the University of Guam, Agency for Human Resources and Development, Guam Community College, Guam Parent-Teacher Association Congress, and the Guam Public School System.

The Public School System is confident that its employees will help achieve the goal of making sure that all Paraprofessionals will be able to assist in preparing, promoting and providing every child an Adequate Public Education.
