Southern High Flavor Tops Kåddon Pika Competition |
|
(Hagåtña, Guam) The Third Annual “I Geran Kåddon Pika” (The Battle of the Hot & Spicy Chicken) had the judges sweating in an all out contest of middle and high schools. Teams of three students and their advisor prepared and presented their version of Guam’s traditional dish “Kåddon Pika.” Sponsored by D.O.E.’s Division of Chamorro Studies and Special Projects, the competition was held this morning at the Tamuning Cost-U-Less location. Oceanview took first in the Middle school division, while Team “Kåddon Pikakakakaka” led by advisor Siñot John Aguon was crowned the High school champions. Southern High’s Anthony Quichocho, Roshjun Aguon, and Paul Flores also took the overall title for both divisions. Judges based their selection on presentation, taste, use of ingredients, creativity, and cleanliness of preparation. Acting Administrator Ronald Laguana was pleased to see more than just a cooking contest. “The advisors were speaking to the students in Chamorro and the students were responding while they were preparing the dish.” said Laguana. Team “Pika Palao’an” from Simon Sanchez High school took second place with Team “Dudos Puyitos” from George Washington High taking third.
