Islanders Take First ProStart Culinary Championship

(Hagåtña, Guam) The John F. Kennedy Islanders (JFK) now have another championship to place in the trophy case. This afternoon at the First ProStart High School Culinary Competition, the team of Kiani Fernandez (grade 11), Tisha Lujan (grade 11) Cerena Camacho (grade 11), Natasha Sablan (grade 12), and Lalanea De-Soto (grade 11) convinced island judges why they should go Disney World to compete against 28 other state high schools.

Guam Community College Associate Professor and JFK ProStart Instructor Susan Seay said it took dedication and hard work for the team to accomplish what they did. “You have to want to be here and the desire, and practice, practice, practice.” said Seay.

Seay added the team put in 25 hours a week for the last five weeks honing their skills. “They told me, ‘we’re only chopping and cutting…’ and I said to them you have to have excellent knife skills in order to compete and win.” she said.

Chef Mentor, Christophe Durliat from the Hilton Resort & Spa helped coach the all-female squad who are now headed to Orlando, Florida next month for the National ProStart Student Invitational Championship.

This competition is featured on the TV Food Network. Twenty-six states were represented at this competition last year.
