ProStart Program To Test Students Culinary Skills |
|
(Hagåtña, Guam) All eleventh and twelfth grade students enrolled in Guam Community College’s secondary Tourism program, in Guam’s four high schools, will be competing in a culinary competition designed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s ProStart Program. The competition takes place tomorrow, Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Agana Shopping Center’s Center Court. The culinary competition will test the students’ skill and knowledge in foodservice. Teams, comprised of four students each, will demonstrate their creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal in 60 minutes. Not only do the students prepare the meals, they also write the menus, recipes, practice safe food handling and budget the activity. Winning teams from the in-school competitions will work under mentor chefs from Guam’s hospitality industry, to enhance and improve their skills, and compete for the Guam title at an all-island culinary competition on March 19, 2005. Their performance during the practical session is observed and rated by judges from the hospitality industry. The winning team, from the all-island competition, will represent Guam and compete in the National ProStart Student Invitational in April 2005. This competition is featured on the TV Food Network. 26 states were represented at this competition last year.
