Modifications in the Social Studies LOTE Class

Following integrated language teaching strategies the Social Studies LOTE program  in this class teaches the regular prescribed curriculum and applies the modifications appropriate for ESL students.

The goal of the LOTE program is to teach content from the Language Arts perspective.  For that purpose the activities chosen for this class enhance the personal and linguistic development of the students by presenting reading materials at the appropriated level.

These activities match the cultural make-up of the class.  The class is arranged in such way as to facilitate small group interaction thus providing opportunities for students to work in cooperative groups or in partners.

In this class we explain abstract concepts as completely as possible and we review frequently.  We shorten assignments and we give extra time for students to acquire the concepts.  We divide reading assignments into several parts, and  we present the main concepts for each section orally, we paraphrase when necessary, and we give additional examples, simplifying the wording of assignments. Questions are read aloud before assigning them, and we take extra time for explanations, we give examples, and the answering of questions is allowed.  The activities in the LOTE class use as many visual and concrete experiences as possible taking into account the students’ learning styles.

We present the information in an interesting manner, using attractive materials, holistic reading methods, Language Experience Approach (LEA), etc.  This approach is crucial to LOTE learners.  Students in this class are encouraged to participate in class discussion to clarify cultural references and to assess differences and similarities between their native language and English.
