The Guam Public School System offers many benefits. The following is
a general overview of benefits which may be available to you upon
employment:
Retirement
The mandatory employee
contribution rate is set at a minimum of 5% of the member's base pay.
The Government of Guam Defined Contribution System does not prohibit an
employee from membership due to his or her age. Membership is optional
for employees other than Permanent. Teacher Pay Option
Newly hired teachers have
the pay option to select either nine (9) months (1,680) hours or twelve
(12) months (2,080) hours of the teacher's salary schedule. Group Health Insurance
The Government of Guam has
a contract with several major health insurance companies for health
coverage. These companies each have a flat rate premium. The premium is
jointly contributed by the employee and the Government of Guam.
Membership in group health is optional. Health coverage is based on a
contract year and rates are subject to change each contract year. Life Insurance
The Government of Guam has
a contract with Individual Assurance Company. This company provides
Group Term Life Insurance to employees of the Government of Guam. All
active full-time employees who have served six (6) consecutive months in
the government of Guam are eligible. Membership is optional. Basic
Coverage is provided at no cost to the employee; however, supplemental
coverage above the basic is optional. BASIC COVERAGE PREMIUM IS PAID BY
THE GOVERNMENT OF GUAM. When the employee elects to sign up for Group
Term Life Insurance, the employee, depending on the selected coverage,
pays a flat premium. Sick Leave
Employees are entitled to
Sick Leave Benefits. Accrual of Sick leave is four (4) hours bi-weekly
that an employee is paid for on a full-time status. Sick leave may
continue to be accrued for as long as the employee remains under paid
status. If an employee separated service with the Guam Public School
System in good standing and returns, all unused accumulated sick
leave will be restored to the employee's credit. Unused Sick Leave will
be converted to cash upon separation by death of an employee, and that
said cash will be paid to a designated beneficiary or beneficiaries.
Personal Leave
Teachers are granted three
(3) school days paid leave each school year for personal reasons or to
conduct personal business which cannot be accomplished after school or
on weekends. Unused personal leave cannot be accumulated for use in
succeeding school years.
Maternity Leave
Maternity Leave is granted
to a female employee occupying a permanent position who is absent from
work because of confinement for childbirth. Such Maternity Leave shall
not exceed twenty (20) days. Such Maternity Leave shall be any twenty
(20) days encompassing the date of childbirth. Paternity Leave
Twenty (20) days excused
absence with pay shall be granted for the purpose of attending to family
needs at the time of birth of a male employee's child or adoption of it.
The employee shall have the option of using the twenty (20) days leave
either prior to delivery, or one (1) day prior and nineteen (19) days
position-delivery or twenty (20) days post-delivery. Military Leave
Employees are granted up to
a maximum of fifteen (15) days paid leave per year for military duty
upon appropriate certification of such duty. The employees shall give as
much advance notice of such leave request as possible. Employees are
encouraged to take necessary Military Leave during summer months if they
can. Administrative Leave
Employees may be granted
Administrative Leave with pay to attend or participate in any
professional educational conference, institute, workshop, or seminar,
provided they have received advanced approval from both their
Principal/Administrator and the Superintendent of Schools. Job Related On-the-Job
Injury
Employees are entitled up
to forty-five (45) calendar days of continuation of pay because of
temporary total disability or temporary partial disability due to a
job-related injury that is substantiated by medical report(s). A maximum
of forty-five (45) calendar days per injury is allowed. The forty-five
(45) calendar days begin the day after the injury. Bereavement Leave
Employees are granted two
(2) days Bereavement Leave in full pay status upon the death of an
immediate member of the family. Immediate member of the family mean's
employee's spouse, common-law, mother, father, grandparents, guardian, children,
grandchildren, in-loco parentis, sister, brother, mother-in-law and
father-in-law. Step, adoptive and spouse of adoptive parent, children
and grandchildren would also be considered "immediate family". Employees
may use the two (2) days or sixteen (16) hours of leave not spread over
more than four (4) working days. |
