The School Health Education Program is the catalyst in providing the school health education community the capabilities to access health education resources and needed skills development. These address the prevention of risk behaviors, specifically, unintended and intentional injuries; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy, HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases; dietary patterns that contribute to disease; and insufficient physical activity. By focusing on these issues, we seek to improve educational outcomes in Guam’s schools. Direct funding is provided by the Division of Adolescent School Health (DASH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Guam's Healthy Future Funds. |

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Health education is an instructional program that provides all students the opportunities to experience and practice behaviors that lead to the development of healthful habits and attitudes for healthy living. The National Health Education Standards and the Guam Department of Education Health Education Standards are the driving force in establishing and developing healthy behaviors through formal classroom instructions in grades K-12. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The annual Education for Life Conference provides professional development workshops that relate to the prevention of the six categories of adolescent risk behaviors identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Health Education Endorsement Program is a summer institute that offers health related courses for teachers, school health counselors, and counselors. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT The program coordinates with local, regional, and national health agencies and organizations for school health resources. Currently, Guam leads the nation’s Asian and Pacific Islanders at the DASH Task Force on Health Disparities Among School-Aged Youth of Color. Guam also leads the region in the Pacific Regional Leadership for School Health Education (CNMI, Palau, FSM, Marshall Islands, Hawaii, and American Samoa). The program administers the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, School Health Education Profile, and the Youth Tobacco Survey and provides survey results to the health community for use in the classroom, research work, grant writing and program planning. All health programs are comprehensive and are aligned to the Healthy People 2010. PROGRAM AFFILIATES
