Local concern for the
achievement of our students and President George W. Bush’s education
reform agenda, No Child Left Behind, provided the impetus for the
District to outline its efforts to ensure that the proper tools and
mechanisms are in place for students to get the best education possible.
The Division of Curriculum
and Instruction was tasked with the responsibility to look at available
resources used in the classroom; namely, the Content Standards
and Performance Indicators, SAT 10 objectives, adopted textbooks and the
National Standards, and align the various components to each other.
Teachers are faced with challenges of creating meaningful and rigorous
lessons from a multitude of resources; this document is an effort to
organize the various tools into a coherent framework that is relevant to
the teacher.
A cadre of Language
Arts and Reading
teachers, representing all grade levels, reviewed local District
standards, external assessments including SAT 10, adopted textbooks and
national standards. Since June 2002, these teachers have been meeting
monthly with the Curriculum and Instruction staff and their respective
cluster teams to decide where and how all these resources fit into the
expectations set by the Guam Education Policy Board.
